This Week

Hi all,

We’ve got a very busy week ahead of us!

Tomorrow is pajama day for our class. If you have a flashlight you can send with your child tomorrow as well, please do! It is part of our surprise for tomorrow. If you don’t have one, it isn’t essential, but could make what we will be doing more fun. 🙂 Book orders are also due tomorrow.

Wednesday is the bike rodeo. Mrs. Slobodian sent out an email with details this afternoon, but basically all students need a helmet. They can bring a bike (or scooter if they cannot bring a bike). They’re also welcome to share a bike with siblings, cousins, etc. if needed (all classes will have their own time).

Thursday, Spruce Manor has invited us for a thank you BBQ. They are providing hot dogs, chips, water, and a frozen treat for us. We will walk over around 11:45 and return to the school for the afternoon. Nut and dairy allergies have been checked for; however, if you’d like your child to also eat something in addition to or instead of what is provided, please send that in their lunch as normal and they can bring that over with them! If it is nice, we will eat outside – picnic style – if not, we will do an “indoor picnic”. Please know that this plan is subject to change, but I will update you if anything changes!

Friday is space dress up day!

I think that is all for now!

Thanks,

Next Week

Following the long weekend, we have a busy week here at school!

The buy one, get one free (pay for the higher priced item, lower priced one is free) is on next week. Our class will have time to go and buy on Wednesday afternoon. There will be no preview/list making day with the class, just buying time. You are welcome to send money with your child to purchase if you’d like. It will also be open after school for purchasing.

On Thursday evening (May 24) the school will host the annual BBQ and book swap. Students may bring used books to school next week (up until Thursday morning). I will record how many books are brought in by each child and then Thursday evening they may go and pick out new-to-them books in the gym! Students may bring as many books as they’d like to school, but the maximum amount they can pick up new-to-them is 5 (so for example, if you bring 10 books, the max you can get is 5).

Please see the school newsletter which went out today for more details about these 3 events!

Classroom Happenings — Please Read!

Hi all,

Just wanted to send a quick message to all parents. I am finishing up a class update newsletter that I will send in the next day or two, but wanted to touch on 2 points before then, as they are more time sensitvie:

  1. Our playground and fields have become quite wet and muddy. If possible, please send kids to school in some sort of footwear that will keep them dry or somewhat dry (i.e. rubber boots, winter boots if they are partly rubberized). In addition, sending a couple extra pairs of socks in their backpack is also helpful for when water does get into their footwear!
  2. We began letter writing today. Our class discussed why people write letters, what they write in letters, and who people write letters to. As we brainstormed, someone came up with the idea to write to recovering players from the Humboldt Bronco’s team. Many kids loved this idea, and I did as well! Students all chose who they’d like to write to, whether that was a friend, family member, teacher, player from Broncos, etc. Tomorrow we will write polished copies of our letters. Students who wrote to someone they know will either deliver the letter themselves (i.e. if it is a friend in the school) or bring it home (if it is a family member). I told them that, with permission, I would deliver the Bronco’s letters to the hospital to be passed on; however, if you are not comfortable with that, please send me and email and I will make sure that your child’s letter is not included. The letters that do get passed on will not include last names or identifying features like phone numbers, addresses, or photos of children. They will include first names, as well as the school we are from. Again, I want to respect everyone’s interests and privacy, so if you DO NOT want your child’s letter passed on, please let me know. Otherwise, I plan to deliver the letters tomorrow.

Thanks all and enjoy the warm weather!

Have a Great Break!

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Easter and for you all to enjoy your time together over the break!

Some students brought home their good copies of their stories we have been working on. If they have, please help them find some time over the break to finish them up. We were trying to wrap them up so that we can start something new over the break. Most kids are quite close to being done and shouldn’t require much time to finish. If they could be sent back after the break completed, it would be very appreciated!

Thanks!

Easter Celebrations Tomorrow

Hi all,

As our day planners have noted, tomorrow morning we will be walking to Spruce Manor to help the residents get in the Easter mood! Please make sure students have weather appropriate footwear and outdoor clothing!

In the afternoon, we will be watching “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown”. I will also be bringing in some popcorn as a treat for the kids. I believe popcorn fits within all of our dietary concerns and allergies, but please let me know if you have any concerns or questions about the snack or show!

Happy spring and Happy Easter!

Skating

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note that skating has been extending for this week and next week! Grade 3’s will skate tomorrow and then one last time next Thursday; grade 2’s this Friday and next! Please mark this on your calendars so that kids have their skates and helmets at school on their day! As always, if you are free, skate tying help is always greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much and have a great evening!

Wear Red and White

Tomorrow is the opening ceremonies for our PVS Olympics! If able, students should wear red and/or white, to stand for our country of Japan. We will have our closing ceremonies on Friday, where, again if able, students should wear red and/or white!

February Update

Happy Groundhog’s Day, everyone!

Two groundhogs who saw their shadows, two who did not. We had a bit of a debate today of whether we would have more winter or if spring was coming soon. In either case, hopefully it warms up so we can get back outside again over these next two weeks. From now until the break, we are quite busy! We have lots of special events and days coming up, including PVS Olympics week, Valentine’s Day, the book fair, dress up days, a few assemblies, and more.

Please see our class newsletter here for more details!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Spruce Manor Recap

On Friday, our class went for their first visit of the new year to Spruce Manor. We knew we would be going over to play bingo with the residents, so ahead of time we practiced playing bingo, as well as practiced how to help someone play bingo.

When Friday morning came, it was beautiful, warm and sunny. We got to enjoy that sunshine on our walk over, then had a great time with the residents when we arrived! As always, our group of students brought, gave, and shared many smiles to and with the residents!

When we got back, as usual, we had a little debrief about our experience. Just like each time before, I was blown away with the compassion, empathy, insight, and care that shone through in our students’ comments and thoughts. Here are some of my favorite comments that were shared:

“My resident I was with didn’t talk that much, but when I saw her smiling and laughing I knew that she was having fun together with me…That made me feel so happy and good because I think that us being there helped make her day more fun!”

“I think we can really help other people have fun and maybe remind them of happy memories when they were young or when their children were young.”

“I think it is nice for them when we visit because it is really nice to have someone to play with and I don’t think they always have someone to play with or talk to.”

“I was kind of sad to leave because I had so much fun with my resident!”

“My resident remembered my name and that makes me think I am kind of like her friend. That reminds me of when we talked about how you can be friends with anyone, even if they are older than you!”

We hope to continue to our visits and build some of those bonds, as well as grow ourselves as people and community members! These visits are always a great time to remind us that no matter how small we may be, we have so much to offer and can make a difference in peoples days and lives if we put forth the effort!
